Hi and Merry Christmas to all.

Christopher finished two pool sessions on Monday and Tuesday while we were out got a call Chris has a room a Laurel place up the street from SMH.

Address is : 9688- 137A street
Forth floor room # 1413c

Upon entering turn right follow down the hall way to the elevator on the left you must hold the four and the blank buttons together to call it safety feature. When exiting the elevator head straight down the hall through the doors that say Ivydale continue down the hall last door on the left it is a private room. Just knock and enter.

Chris will be out during christmas morning and again for the dinner hours that night. I will try to stay on top of his outing times so you dont miss him.
I know he woukd appreciate everyone and all who can spare the time for a quick visit during this very busy time for all of us. While Chris is out all are welcome to visit at home as well.

Mid January is the time foe Ponoka they seem to be staying firm that will be a for time frame!!!!
Merry Christmas evryone thanks for checking.

Hello,
Always have so much to say and so little time to say it or my mind goes blank when I get the time to sit down and write it oh well here goes.

Christmas is almost here and still life revolves around and around, whether we are ready or not. I guess we better get ready and enjoy the closeness of family and friends that only this time of year permits or that we let it because of Christmas.

Halvar Jonson Centre called in Early December to say that Chris is next on the list and will be heading there in early to mid January. So with fingers crossed and hopes high I look forward to that day with a heavy heart and mixed emotions. Don’t want him to be that far away again and yet this is the place to get what we need so we are very grateful for the opportunity.

Aqua therapy has been going on three times a week with Cranial Sacral massage once a week, Shiatsu and acupuncture once a week along with extra Shiatsu treatments whenever Chris’ Aunt Janice can make it in.
Over the next few days Chris is scheduled to be moved over to Laurel Place which is straight up the street from the front doors at Surrey Memorial. This is brand new and the atmosphere is more like home without the hospital setting should make visits more relaxed and easier for all to drop by. I will post the date is to happen as soon as I am informed. If any of you have questions please feel free to call me any time.

I have just picked up the portable lift and had custom ramps made so we can now get Chris home and just about anywhere else we want or need to take him.

Funny how ease of movement through the day to where ever or whatever we need is taken for granted as we start everyday without a thought. Sorry to sound heavy but this fact hits home every day and thought at this time of year with all the celebrating……… take it easy and don’t take any chances on the road. Have a safe and happy holiday everybody.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New year from Doctor Christopher Bigelow and all of his family.

P.S.
Chris will be having a Shiatsu/Acupuncture session on Saturday Dec. 20th at 10 AM to 12 PM at the hospital in his room so if you would avoid visits at this time.
Monday Aqua therapy will be out from130-530.

December 1 2008

Hello

Not much in the way of changes lately, Chris continues to respond to the Aqua therapy, the cranial sacral massage has been tweekiing weird and wonderful responses to everything from looks to sounds directed at conversation.
We will miss Mondays session but will try to make it up on Tuesday morning, so he will be at the pool three days in a row Tuesday-Thursday ready to relax and talk it up with visitors on Friday and the weekend. Please take great care in addressing Chris with the conversation being close enough for him to hear speak slowly and clearly. His glasses are in the top drawer and his field of view seems to resonate around 18 to 30 inches, please turn off the radio while talking his hearing is probably very difficult to hear over other sounds.
Thanks everyone much appreciated.

November 19, 2008

Hello,

No news yet from the Halvar Jonson Centre we will be calling in Early December to
Check on admission date to ensure all is still moving forward for Chris visit there.

Aqua therapy has been going for 15 visits and continuing very well it is still amazing to see he can move with greater freedom and seems to really enjoy the relaxing part of therapy as well as the joints and back massage in the water at 93 degrees.

We have a cranial sacral practitioner who specializes in quite a few disciplines she is coming in once a week to work with Chris as well his Aunt Janice who does Rehki and Shiastsu will be working once a week with him at home or somewhere away from the hospital and as well Janice’s instructor will be administering acupuncture and Shiatsu every other week on the weekend.

I will be away Friday thru Tuesday so any extra visits would be greatly appreciated. Saturday November 22 between 10:45 and 12:30 a session will be taking place at the hospital if you would plan your visits around this time thank you.

Schedule for the water has changed a bit:
Mondays at 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
Wednesday at 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
Thursday at 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. This session will be followed by a cranial sacral treatment while at the pool.

We leave the hospital 1-1/2 hours prior to each appt and return 1 hour after for those who are visiting. Remember if you want to come and observe let me know ahead of time and we can arrange it.

Still trying to arrange outside massage as soon as we have our own lift to get him out to the appointments.

Will post updates to Alberta as they become available.
A very special thank you to Auntie Lesley for all the extra time she watches over Chris when we can’t be there it really does mean allot
Bye for now

It’s been awhile, but it is all relative in the big picture.

Chamber has been slowed lack of time and people and input of other therapies Aqua, Massage and Acupuncture for another round at this time we are trying to purchase a portable chamber for Chris.

Sinse last post Kirsty, derek and Jay have been down and in the Chamber with Chris all had a good experience and was a change from the ordinary.
As well it gave me a little time away to get stuff done.
Ponoka was approved by the health ministry on Tuesday we are now waiting for an admission date from the center itself.
When that happens I will let you know here.
New pictures will be posted with the next update thanks for your understanding and keeping in touch bye for now.

September 24, 2008

Hi there everyone,
Still not a lot to report we are still waiting for word on Alberta Rehab.
Will post when we know.
This last week has been a little rough as breathing difficulties come and go guess this a normal thing as long as you are in a hospital. Not normal is having doctors not return phone calls or answer direct questions reguarding problems.
Its a bit of an irony as Chris is the all inclusive doctor never leaving any questions unanswered or explaining everything 10 times if that what it took.
We are feeling cheated by a system that he wanted so badly to be a part of and help out with, it now becomes the very system that is walking away from him, something he did not believe would happen here in Canada.
Now is probably the time to start making waves and pushing the politicians for answers and find out where they stand on all of these issues before we vote???????
Anyway chamber visits stopped breifly because he may or may not have Pneumonia. They only did three sepate X-rays and blood work as well as two doctors examine him. The results one thinks he does have it the other thinks not talk about a waste of time and money.
Will keep updating his in and out times as to give heads up whether or not he is at the hospital or not.
Thanks for checking up on him.
Sorry to Kirsty who went and did a session with Chris in the chamber I was going to put a picture of them up here but the SD card screwed up and I lost the pictures. We will have to get another.

Monday September 15, 2008

Hey all,

Non exciting week havent talked to Shelley about yesterday but all is progressing.
Chris got the Botox injections this past week so in about 10 days we will be seeing effects of this. Hopefully all the splinting will have great effects once the resistance is removed.
Taking off to meet with the wheel chair people as his new chair will arrive this morning. Once all is done I will update a little further this afternoon. Thank you Kirsty for attending and going into the chamber on Saturday so I could free up more work time (pictures will be posted shortly).

Sunday, September 7, 2008

Good afternoon,

Yes it has been a week between posts, not allot has been happening this last week much like last.
Chamber appointments have slowed, as I needed to finish some pressing work prior to arranging his acceptance and travel to the Halvar Johnson Center in Alberta.
(We do not yet have a definitive date set yet, but will fill it in here as soon as we know.)

Christopher did go to the hyperbaric chamber this week but sessions were stopped after his feed tube was dislodged from its placement while exiting the chamber and had to have it replaced the next day.
This has caused a slight set back in the treatment process hopefully not to long.
Sorry to those of you who came up to visit Chris and he wasn’t here as we were not aware he would not be there on Wednesday, we try to keep an up to date schedule, at least as close as possible sometimes things become very busy and it doesn’t get posted in time. If you need to check and can’t get on to the blog you can phone or text message any of us and check what’s up for the day.

We are giving him a few days to let it heal and set in so he will be at the hospital Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday Shelley and I will be taking him to GF Strong to have his legs and wrist reassess and muscle relaxants injected to prevent cramping. So he will be back at the hospital about 230 –300 pm on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday we have not set hyperbaric appointments at this time.

Next Sunday Christine Wall will be up to do some massage on Chris if any of you are around she could probably use a hand in moving him around, she should be there sometime around 1200 leaving by at least 130PM she has to be away for a 2:00 PM appointment.

Thank you Helen for making the album available and keeping the pages clear and open for those whom would like to add to it. Remember if you have photo's of Chris you would like to share bring them in and either put them in the album or leave them in an envelope and Helen will trim them or what ever is needed and place them for you.

Monday September 1, 2008

Good afternoon,

Yes it has been a while, not allot has been happening this last week.
Chris did have a scare on Monday night as we thought he had a Seizure but upon arriving at the hospital and seeing Chris and hearing his vital signs at the time it did not add up.
Following morning the doctor on agreed it was not a seizure but one of his uptight moments when his breath is short and flem causing tough breathing also a very tiring day as Shelley Uncle Larry and I had him out to the dentist and Shelley then toof him to a Private physio appointment. He has been a bit tired with all the running around and keeping him busy so he had four days to rest with only the hospital physio to contend with.
He was back to the hyperbaric chamber on Friday for his 15th treatment and will be attending Saturday for the 16th.

We are still waiting for Halvar Johnson medical facility in Ponoka Alberta to coordinate the admission for therapy there on a trial basis probably from 1 to 3 months, during which time we are going to have to scramble to arrange for living arrangements so Chris has a home to come home to. This will be needed as the hospital is not going to be easy to persuade they will put up a fight about where he should go. We will keep everyone informed as to the ongoing drama and pigheadedness the health system throws at us.
We all know that very little help will be coming from the system and anything we want for Chris and his life is going to have to be fought for, so we march on and on.

All of you who are capable with trades and have the time and those who just want to help keep in mind that when we find the property to build on any and all help and support in building a place for Chris would be gratefully appreciated. More info on this will follow as it becomes closer to reality.

Thank you all for caring and sharing as well as checking up on Chris and I will try to be more frequent with the updates.
Kevin.

Update for Thursday the 21st,

Chris has now finished 12 hyperbaric treatments and will skip Thursday as he is off to see Jack Johnson with Shelley tonight. Being a Jack fan hope it triggers a few memories for him and gets him rocking even a little bit.
Chris will be at Hyperbaric chamber on Friday from 230 pm to 630 pm in all likelyhood not back till 700 pm. Saturday morning he will be leaving at 730 for chamber at 900 till 1130 should be back around lunch time.
On Sunday Shelley is taking him out for the afternoon gone at 100 pm for the rest of the day.
Monday he will be at Physio/Massage at 10 am and to the dentist at 200 pm then off to the Chamber for 400 pm.

We have been seeing little changes in what he is doing and his attention, some of this is from others who have not seen him for a while as they would notice more of a change.
We will have more info on treatment in Alberta in a week or two and will fill you in as it happens.

Got run right now hope to get into a regular routine here before long, I now you all understand how precious time is right now.

Monday August 18, 2008

Hey there all,
A few days have passed since last update so lets get to it.
Chris has ungone his 9th hyperbaric treatment 10th will happen today at 4:00 PM. By next Saturday he will have15 sessions. I am asking the neurologist we have been dealing with to check Chris out every 10-15 visits for changes. If any of yo go up to see him and notice things that you didnt before please let us know as the little things tend to get missed when we see him everyday.
We are still waiting for a massage therapist that can handle the chair and also has all the equipment needed to handle Chris so we can proceed.
I have been thinking allot about taking Chris to the pool to get a different sensation and movement but the setting up and planning is not easy. Uncle Larry got a number of a place in Aldergrove that deals with Aqua therapy and they have all the equipment and personal to get him in and do some water stretching and movements will let you know as it progresses.

The facility in Alberta that specializes in brain injuries has agreed to take Chris on a trial basis to see if they can give and do what the hospital and doctors here should have been doing. Basiscally they will try everything that could hanve been done here so Chris could stay close to home, family and friends. It really pisses me off to have to even think of it as a possibility but they specialize in these injuries and if we dont go that route we propably will get no more help here in our home province.
When we do come back or if we are at home Chris' care and costs will be our responsibility as the system here deems him untreatable and not worth persuing. They would like to sent him to a home to eat and sleep with no further therapy or help, mainly beacause of no money and a rehab doctor that has refused to look at or take part in Chris' treatment.

All I can say is that Christopher has more care and knowledge even in his temporary state than most of these so called doctors that are treating him that has to be said tongue in cheek.

This week hyperbaric times will be afternoon at 400 if weather is good and early around 8-9 am if weather is wet, work dependant!!
Chris' mom will have Chris out next Sunday I do not have a time as of yet hopefully she will let me know and I can post it for those who may be wanting to go up on the weekend. I wiil attach a video and mor pistures and try to get back to update after todays session.

Thursday August 14th 2008

Hello everyone,
Hope I do not leave you lingering to long without updates.
We are awfully busy with Chris right now so this site will be updated when ever I can stay awake to update it.
Chris completed his 7th Hyperbaric treatment session today and is tolerating it well.
Anybody that can not make it up that often we would love to encourage you to do so now,
we are trying to note all little things that are changing for those of us that are there every day it is tough to see the little stuff that first starts out.
The doctor at VGH hyperbaric suggested that we ask those who do not see Chris every day to stop by and notice the subtle changes that we might miss. The little things are very hard to determine and very important to note and document.

The hospital is now on a mission to move Chris out, and are not being very nice.
We are selective to where he might go, they coundn't care less in the interm while we are looking for a house that will work and allow for all that is needed as well as visiting that is open and more friendly and relaxed than the hospital.
Will have to address this at a later date may need everyones and more..... support in lobbying MLA's or MP's for thier help.

Chris will be starting massage therapy by next week and we will try to bring it all together with hyperbaric, accupunture, massage and physio and still have visiting time.
Right now is a great and very helpful if all could be there in small numbers so the conversation is directed at Chris with all he is enduring it seem only the voices of friends and family is needed right now to remind him of all the memories and stories we all shared with him.
We must keep his senses alive and overwhelmed with nurturing. the next few months will be crucial to his recovery.
We are also talking with a rehab center in Ponoka Alberta about a possible stint for Chris, our goverment and health system has no where for him to go to help except long term care facility with no further help. I will keep posting updates as they occur.
More photo's and video of Hyperbaric Chamber to follow.
Good Night All

Sunday August 10

Hello again,

In starting out today, I would like to thank Kathleen for sending me a link to a site that recharged my batteries and made all the work seem effortless after watching it.
I will add a link here so everyone can watch it, please allow at least 20 minutes if you dont have the time dont start it until you do. It really shows that all things are possible if you just work hard at it keep your faith.

The link is http://www.harchhyperbarics.com/video.htm so please check it out and then leave a comment so we can see how the rest of you feel. Sometimes, no allot of the time it gets lonely and you feel like everyone has moved on and we keep slipping into the abyss. The days are long and hard but all I have to do is look at Christopher and now how much he is loved and what a special person he is and all the frustration is wiped out.

Saturday was Chris' second Hyperbaric treatment we will go again on Monday for a single treatment at 400 pm so we will be gone from hospital between 300pm to 600pm.

Tuesday Shelley will have him out from 830am until 1000am for accupunture.
Then I will have him out from 1130am until 600pm asa we will start double Hyperbaric treatments all week long Tuesday to Saturday also Shelley will have him to accupunture on Friday morning 830am to 1000am.
It will be a crazy week but cross your fingers and think about Chris he really could use some and all the positive energy we can muster. I will to to post a few pictures on this site of Chris in the Chamber. thanks everyone..

HYPERBARIC UPDATE

Hello everyone, sorry for the missing days, been a busy week.
Chris is doing Acupuncture on Tuesdays and Fridays at 5.00 pm so he is usually gone from 4:30 to 6:00 pm.
We are currently setting up massge therapy for twice to work with the other treatments, as it is important to get all the senses going as close together so they work on the body jointly.
Chris is starting Hyperbaric chamber therapy on Thursday starting at 2:00 pm. So we will be away from the Hospital from 1:00 pm to 5:30 pm.

WHEN WE KNOW THE SCHEDULE FOR HYPERBARIC TREATMENTS WE WILL POST THEM.

Any of you downtown or in Vancouver may want to meet up if we do the two sessions a day, we will have a 4 hour break in between treatments. Right now they are looking at about 60 treatments and then see how things progress. It is quite exciting to see all the possibilities around us.
Please remember that all the company and visitors are greatly appreciated by Chris and family.
Kevin has worked a deal on a Wheelchair van to get Chris out and about and away from the hospital more often. It has opened up all kinds of freedom to teatment being able to move around and go where we want for teatment rather to where we were able to walk!!!!!
Chris went to acupunture on Tuesday then over to u Roberts and Helens for dinner and a relaxing sleep in the shade in the back yard so much more enjoyable than that damn Hospital setting.
We are planning on taking him home more often to spend time away. Any one who wants to visit while at home just let us know. We know quite a few of you do not like the hospital so here is your chance.
We will be updating with photo's and treatment updates as they occur stay tuned.

Wednesday Update

Hello everyone yesterday was another busy one. Chris is now the owner of a wheel chair Van which we hope will aid greatly in the up coming treatments as mobility is now not as much a strain as it was. Freedom to get him out of the hospital and go different places that we all take for granted is great.
It will also open up different therapies that were not available before because you had to be able to travel to them. We did try to venture out a few times but taxi fares and ignorant drivers of the cabs made it extemely expensive and very trying on the nerves.

We will post up coming times were chris will not be at the hospital so that you wont plan on visiting and he is not there.
Also if you are planning to visit it would be great if you posted it or email through the link on this page, if there is a conflict we would be able to let you know ahead of time.
Please, this is all to make things easier by no means are we discouarging drop in visits. every drop in and what ever time you can afford it greatly appreciated. Familiar voices and conversation for Chris is so important right now.

To update on times out:
Chris will be doing an assessment in Vancouver for the Hyperbaric Chamber Treatment on Thursday, we will be gone from 1 pm until about 4:30 pm.
Remember we do love to hear from all of you please leave a comment ask a question or just check how he is doing we will answer all!!!
